The Joy of Simplicity—Why Less is More

We live in a world that tells us more is better—more possessions, more commitments, more hustle. But as I’ve grown older, I’ve come to realize that the opposite is often true. Simplicity brings clarity, peace, and joy that can’t be found in excess.

Wisdom in Simplicity

My Grandpa John, who lived to 98, had a knack for keeping things simple. Despite his many adventures, from serving in WWII to flying planes in his 50s, he lived by a straightforward philosophy: “If it doesn’t add to your life, it’s time to let it go.”

For Grandpa John, simplicity wasn’t about doing less—it was about focusing on what truly mattered. Whether it was spending time with family, pursuing his passions, or taking a road trip to Nova Scotia at 95, he filled his life with meaning, not clutter.

In “Timeless Wisdom”, one elder reflects, “Happiness isn’t in what you own—it’s in what you appreciate.” This perspective is a powerful reminder that joy often comes from subtracting, not adding.

Letting Go of Clutter

Simplicity isn’t just about clearing out physical space—it’s about decluttering your mind, your schedule, and your priorities. For me, simplicity became essential during my recovery from two hip replacements. I had to strip my days down to the essentials: rest, healing, and reconnecting with what mattered most.

The process taught me that letting go creates room for growth. By saying no to the unnecessary, we can say yes to what truly brings us joy and purpose.

Elders often share that one of the keys to a happy life is learning to let go of what no longer serves you—whether it’s material possessions, old grudges, or habits that weigh you down. In “Lessons on Legacy”, one elder shared, “Simplicity isn’t about having less. It’s about living more fully with what you have.”

Finding Joy in Simplicity

As I prepare to return to martial arts in January 2025, I’m carrying this lesson with me. It’s not about doing everything at once or packing my schedule with activities. It’s about showing up fully for the things that matter—teaching, training, and living strong.

So how can we embrace simplicity in our own lives?

  1. Start with Gratitude:
Focus on what you have instead of what you think you need.
  2. Clear the Physical Clutter:
Simplify your space—it’s amazing how much lighter you’ll feel.
  3. Prioritize What Matters:
Say no to distractions so you can say yes to the people and activities that bring you joy.
  4. Simplify Your Mind:
Let go of negative thoughts, unrealistic expectations, or the need to do it all.

Reflections for Today

What areas of your life feel cluttered?

Take a moment to reflect on where you can create more space—whether it’s in your home, your schedule, or your mindset. Simplicity isn’t about sacrifice; it’s about living with intention.

Because in the end, less isn’t just more—it’s freedom. And in that freedom, we find the joy of living strong.
