Staying Mentally Resilient at 62: My Top 7 Tips

Hey there, Living Strong community! Today, I want to let you in on my personal journey and the seven strategies I’ve adopted to maintain my mental and emotional fortitude, especially at the age of 62.

Firstly, I share these insights with you because putting my experiences out into the world empowers me. Secondly, even if it resonates with just one person and gives them the reassurance that they’re not alone in this human journey, it’s worth it.

Understanding My Challenges:
Navigating the nuances of an aging body, being the beacon of strength as the Living Strong Coach, fulfilling my responsibilities as the Enrollment Director at Dinoto’s Action Karate, and embracing the roles of both a parent and a great-grandfather have been my reality. The loss of dear friends and family members adds another layer to my experiences.

Here are the seven strategies I swear by:

  1. Embrace Mindfulness:
Being present can significantly reduce stress and anxiety. I find solace in meditation, reading, writing, Jui Jitsu (light, meditative “rolling”), and deep breathing exercises. How do you stay grounded?
  2. Prioritize Self-Care:
It’s crucial to look after oneself. My routine includes ample sleep, a nutritious diet, and regular physical activity. How do you practice self-care?
  3. Maintain Social Connections:
A strong sense of belonging and purpose arises from meaningful relationships. I make an effort to connect with my circle regularly (I love doing “lunch” and meeting at local cafes), staying connected both offline and via our community Facebook groups, especially the Mt Laurel group. How do you nurture your relationships?
  4. Commit to Lifelong Learning:
Keeping the brain stimulated with new activities or skills not only maintains cognitive function but also fosters joy. In fact, we have many parents and a few grandparents beginning their martial arts journey this month! What new skill are you picking up?
  5. Stay Physically Active:
A consistent fitness regimen positively impacts mental health by reducing stress and enhancing mood. I aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days. What’s your fitness routine?
  6. Effectively Manage Stress:
Recognizing and addressing stressors can significantly improve mental well-being. I’ve adopted relaxation techniques, effective time management, and occasionally therapy. How do you handle stress?
  7. Don’t Hesitate to Seek Professional Help:
Sometimes, we all need a helping hand. If you ever feel overwhelmed, consider reaching out to a professional. Personally, I’ve found Online Therapy extremely helpful! Have you ever considered therapy?

Remember that being proactive about your mental health, fostering connections, staying curious, and embracing self-care are vital as we journey through life. I genuinely hope you found these insights beneficial.

Stay strong and keep thriving! Until next time, have a blessed day! 💪🌟
