Dreaming isn’t just for the young. In fact, some of the most inspiring dreams I’ve ever heard come from those who’ve lived long lives, filled with triumphs, trials, and wisdom. As I’ve learned from the elders in my life, it’s never too late to dream big and chase after what sets your soul on fire.
The Value of Vision

My Grandpa John was a perfect example of someone who never stopped dreaming. In his 50s, he dreamed of becoming a pilot and worked hard to make it a reality. By his 60s, he was flying his own plane. At 95, he dreamed of driving to Nova Scotia because it was one place in North America he hadn’t yet visited. He simply decided, “Why not now?” and made it happen.
For Grandpa John, dreaming wasn’t about age—it was about possibility. He believed that as long as you’re alive, there’s always something worth pursuing.
This aligns with wisdom from “100 Pieces of Advice from 100-Year-Olds”, where one elder shared, “The day you stop dreaming is the day you stop living.” That perspective resonates deeply with me, especially as I prepare to return to martial arts in January 2025.
Dreaming in Action
Dreams don’t always have to be grandiose. Sometimes, they’re about rekindling passions, setting new goals, or simply imagining what life could be if we dared to pursue what we love.
Martial arts has taught me to keep dreaming. Whether it’s mastering a new technique, teaching students, or setting personal goals, the mats have shown me that there’s always more to strive for. Dreams, like growth, are ongoing.
Elders often share that dreaming keeps the mind sharp, the spirit alive, and the heart engaged. As “Lessons on Legacy” points out, “Your legacy isn’t what you’ve done—it’s what you still want to do.”
How to Keep Dreaming
So how do we stay connected to our dreams, especially as life evolves?
- Stay Curious:
Dreaming begins with curiosity. Ask yourself, “What if?” - Set Small Goals:
Big dreams often start with small steps. Break your vision into achievable milestones. - Surround Yourself with Inspiration:
Spend time with people who inspire you and support your dreams. - Never Stop Imagining:
Remember, it’s never too late to start something new, whether it’s a hobby, a career shift, or an adventure.
Reflections for Today
What dream have you been holding onto?
Maybe it’s something you’ve always wanted to do but thought it was too late. Or maybe it’s a new dream that’s just beginning to take shape. Whatever it is, give yourself permission to imagine, to plan, and to pursue it.
Because dreaming isn’t about age—it’s about life. And as long as you’re dreaming, you’re living strong.
