In just two days, I’ll undergo my second hip replacement—a major step in my journey to recovery and my eventual return to the mats in 2025. This moment is both humbling and motivating. It’s a reminder that the path to strength isn’t just about what happens in surgery, physical therapy, or even on the mats—it’s also about the choices I make every single day.
Today, during my meditation and reflection, I focused on creating a meal and nutrition plan that will carry me through this recovery phase and beyond. I believe in being intentional with my actions, and nutrition is no exception. I want to share this journey with my Living Strong community—not just to be transparent, but in the hope that it inspires you to approach your own goals with honesty and purpose.
Why Nutrition Is Central to Recovery
Recovering from one hip replacement was challenging enough, and now, as I prepare for the second, I know I need to give my body everything it needs to heal and rebuild. Nutrition isn’t just about fueling workouts or managing weight; it’s about creating the best possible environment for recovery, energy, and vitality.
For me, this isn’t new territory. Over the decades, I’ve been disciplined with my nutrition—whether as a dancer, a martial artist, or simply someone striving to live strong. But just like my training has evolved, so has my approach to food. With where I am now, this plan isn’t just about physical strength. It’s about mental clarity, spiritual empowerment, and setting myself up to thrive in my everyday life.
The Power of Intention
As I sit with my thoughts and map out this plan, I’m reminded that every action matters. It’s easy to think of food as an afterthought, but the truth is, what I choose to put on my plate impacts everything—my body’s ability to heal, my mind’s ability to focus, and my spirit’s ability to stay strong and grounded.
In this reflective space, I’m also taking time to research the foods that will reduce inflammation, promote joint health, and sustain energy. It’s not just about what I eat—it’s about how I eat. Timing my meals around my workouts, finding balance in macronutrients, and yes, even planning for those moments when the struggle is real (looking at you, potato chips!) are all part of this process.
Speaking of potato chips, let’s just say they’ve been a sneaky companion over the years. While I may have danced around them (pun intended) during my more disciplined moments, they’ve somehow always managed to find their way back into my life. But like with anything in martial arts, it’s about the long game. I might lose a round, but I’m determined to win the match.
A Transparent Journey
One of the reasons I’m sharing this is to be honest with myself and with all of you. I don’t have it all figured out, but I’m committed to doing the work. I want my Living Strong community to know that this process—building a nutrition plan, preparing for surgery, and setting my sights on 2025—isn’t easy, but it’s meaningful.
I’ve learned that there’s power in transparency. By sharing my struggles and triumphs, I hope to show that you don’t have to have all the answers to start. Whether you’re recovering from surgery, striving for a fitness goal, or simply trying to feel better, your journey is valid. And it’s okay if it’s messy. The key is to stay committed, take small steps, and never lose sight of your “why.”
Living Strong in Every Way
As I prepare for this next chapter, I’m reminded of how interconnected everything is. The discipline it takes to create this plan mirrors the discipline I bring to the mats. The clarity that comes from eating well fuels my work, my relationships, and my mindset. And the spirit of perseverance that guides me in recovery is the same spirit that keeps me grounded in life.
This meal plan isn’t just about recovery; it’s about showing up for myself and for the people I care about. It’s about honoring the gift of life and finding strength in the smallest, most deliberate actions—whether it’s preparing a healthy meal, meditating on my goals, or laughing at my ongoing battle with chips.
For My Community
To my Living Strong family: I share this journey with you because I believe in the power of connection. My hope is that by being open about what I’m doing, I can inspire you to take your own steps toward strength—whatever that looks like for you.
Maybe it’s creating a meal plan, starting a new workout routine, or simply choosing to show up with intention. Whatever it is, know that you’re not alone. We’re all in this together, learning, growing, and finding new ways to rise.
Here’s to living strong, fueling strong, and stepping into every challenge with purpose and gratitude. And yes, here’s to laughing along the way—even if it’s about a bag of chips.
