What keeps us alive, vibrant, and connected to the world around us? The answer, I’ve found, is curiosity. It’s not just a passing interest—it’s the spark that drives us to learn, grow, and find joy in the everyday. Curiosity is a superpower, and it’s one we can cultivate at any age.
The Lifelong Gift of Curiosity
My Grandpa John, who lived to 98, was one of the most curious people I’ve ever known. Whether it was learning to fly a plane in his 50s, buying his first computer when most people his age were avoiding them, or setting out on a solo road trip to Nova Scotia at 95, his life was fueled by a constant desire to explore and understand.
He often told me, “When you stop being curious, you stop growing.” Those words have stayed with me, especially as I navigate my own recovery journey and prepare to return to martial arts in January 2025.
In “Timeless Wisdom”, one elder shared, “Curiosity keeps you young. It’s what makes life worth living.” This perspective resonates deeply, reminding me that staying curious isn’t just about seeking answers—it’s about finding meaning and connection in the process of discovery.
Curiosity in Action
Curiosity isn’t just about grand adventures; it’s about engaging with the world in small, meaningful ways. For me, martial arts has always been a place where curiosity comes alive. Each technique, each challenge, and each lesson is an opportunity to ask, “What can I learn from this?”
Curiosity also played a key role during my recovery from two hip replacements. Instead of focusing solely on the limitations, I found myself asking questions: How can I improve today? What new methods can I explore to rebuild strength? That curiosity kept me engaged and hopeful, even on the hardest days.
As “Lessons on Legacy” points out, “Legacy isn’t just about what you leave behind—it’s about what you keep discovering while you’re here.” Curiosity gives us the tools to keep growing, no matter where we are in life.
How to Cultivate Curiosity
Curiosity is like a muscle—the more you use it, the stronger it gets. Here are a few ways to keep your curiosity alive:
- Ask Questions:
Approach life with a mindset of wonder. Why is something the way it is? How could it be different? - Try Something New:
Step outside your comfort zone—take a class, explore a hobby, or visit a place you’ve never been. - Stay Open-Minded:
Curiosity thrives when we’re willing to see the world from new perspectives. - Embrace Failure as Learning:
Curiosity isn’t about perfection—it’s about growth. Mistakes are part of the process.
Reflections for Today
What are you curious about right now?
Maybe it’s a skill you’ve always wanted to learn, a topic you’ve been meaning to explore, or even a question about your own potential. Whatever it is, let that curiosity guide you.
Because curiosity isn’t just a fleeting interest—it’s a superpower. It keeps us engaged, connected, and alive. And as long as we’re curious, we’re living strong.
If you’re curious about trying martial arts—and are serious about exploring that curiosity—I invite you to join me as I get back on the mats to train and teach martial arts starting January 11, 2025.
