A Life of Grit, Grace, and Growth: My Life’s Mission to Inspire and Empower

Hello, my amazing website visitors and community members! 👋

Over the past few months, I’ve been on quite a journey—recovering from surgeries, preparing for a return to martial arts, and sharing reflections on resilience and living strong. Along the way, I realized I needed to revisit my story, not just for myself but for those of you who’ve joined me on this incredible path. So, here’s a glimpse into my journey, my passion, and the heart of what I stand for.

Born in the vibrant, gritty boroughs of The Bronx, New York, and now calling Mount Laurel, NJ, my home, my life has been a blend of trials and triumphs, grit and grace. Raised by a single mom alongside three sisters and a brother, I learned resilience, determination, and empathy—values that have guided me through every twist and turn. Dropping out of school in the 10th grade due to family hardships, I got my education from life itself. Growing up in a tough neighborhood taught me how to face adversity head-on. But amidst the chaos, I found a sanctuary: the arts. When I walked into my first ballet class in my early 20s, it felt like stepping into another world. That one leap turned into a career—performing with ballet companies, starring in musical theater productions, and traveling the globe, including performing in Germany’s Starlight Express.

In 1986, my artistic journey brought me to Hershey Park, where I performed in a dance show. It was there I met Renee, the love of my life. This chance meeting became the foundation of a life filled with adventure, love, and partnership. Renee brought light and joy into my world, and together we’ve built a family rooted in resilience and creativity. Our two children, Alexandra and Christian, have been the center of our universe, each bringing their own incredible gifts and perspectives to our journey. Today, one of my greatest joys is spending time with my grandson, Seraph, who reminds me every day what it means to embrace life with wonder and curiosity.

A few years later, while performing in Bochum, Germany, I met my martial arts instructor, Arndt Mallepree. He introduced me to Modern Arnis and grappling, opening a new chapter in my life. Martial arts became more than just a practice—it became a way of life. Reflecting on this journey, I see a life rich with highs and lows—from the struggles of the South Bronx streets to the transformative power of the arts and martial arts. Today, I’m proud to serve as Program Director at Action Karate Mt. Laurel, where I help students of all ages discover their inner strength. Learn more about Arndt Mallepree’s inspiring journey here.

More recently, I’ve faced a personal challenge with double hip replacement surgeries. This was a decision ten years in the making, driven by the belief that it’s never too late to prioritize quality of life. My mantra: “You’re never too old, broken, bruised, or beat, and it’s never too late to pursue a dream.” One of my greatest joys has been co-authoring the Living Strong Kids Adventures series with my daughter, Alex. These stories inspire children to tackle life’s challenges with courage and creativity. Discover how challenges can become opportunities here. And in January 2025, I’ll be stepping back onto the mats to teach martial arts classes. These will include new adult programs that blend insights from my 50-plus years of martial arts with lessons tailored to parents and grandparents who, like me, believe in the power of starting anew.

My mornings start early—around 4 AM. This is my sacred time for reflection, writing, and creating. This year, I’ve begun a series of daily writings inspired by lessons from individuals aged 80 and older. Their wisdom, combined with my reflections, focuses on resilience, gratitude, and “living strong”—themes that resonate deeply with my journey and, I hope, yours too. Read more about how elders teach adaptability and growth here.

Faith has always been my anchor. It shapes my actions and reminds me to value every connection. My studies as a Licentiate Minister and Positive Psychology Practitioner strengthen my commitment to fostering hope and understanding. My grandfather, John, is a constant inspiration—a man who lived life on his own terms, health challenges and all. His legacy reminds me to live authentically and gratefully. Explore personal spirituality and its power here. I’m a proud father and grandfather, cherishing time with my family. Whether it’s through martial arts, writing, or my podcast, Living Strong Adventures, my focus is on helping others overcome adversity and uncover their inner strength.

As I prepare to return to teaching, my goal is to inspire others to take that first step—whether in martial arts or life. In 2025, I’ll be launching the Martial Arts Living Strong Blueprint series, a roadmap for building strength, resilience, and connection in body, mind, and spirit. I can’t wait to share this journey with you. Let’s connect and support one another on this path of life. Be sure to stay connected with me by subscribing to my newsletter or on social media (Facebook, Instagram, etc). And remember, life isn’t just about weathering storms—it’s about learning to dance in the rain. Together, let’s live strong every single day.

Thank you for taking the time to read and share in my story. If you’ve got thoughts, questions, or just want to introduce yourself, drop a comment below. I’d love to hear from you. Let’s keep building this incredible community together.

With much love and gratitude,
Peter
