Martial Arts Education And Profession: Why I Think Talking To Tom Callos Is Important To Your Growth

I just finished having a great conversation via skype with my good friend (and coach) Tom Callos. I cannot tell you how grateful I am to Tom for helping me to work and stay outside of my comfort zone. He has challenged me to stretch myself physically, mentally, spiritually AND SOCIALLY; to connect with my community and use technology to be a better martial arts educator and activist. He introduced me to WordPress, NING, Flavors.me and many other platforms. He helped me to become a better writer so that I can better tell my story and the story of the many people I am meeting. He taught me to seek out the expertise of people outside of the martial arts in areas of education, human rights, and community activism so that I can be better equipped to serve my community and students. He taught me that my life – what I do and what I inspire others to do – is the story that “sells” and is what “real” marketing is about.

Today I was asked the question, “Who are the people who have been the most significant “influencers” for your work?” Tom was on the top of the list. FYI, here is my list: Tom Callos, Dave Kovar, Dr. Patch Adams, Nick Vujicic

I encourage you to contact Tom and chat with him, he WILL stir you to greater heights.

“Peter, thank you for the nice words. It is ironic that so many of my friends and peers are attending seminars, so many seminars, and discussing so little of the essence of their work-of-tomorrow. Too many martial arts school owners are looking for “what works,” and copying it –and then getting stuck there, thus crippling themselves –and the people who they should be influencing and mentoring. What a pity, but how blind we all can be, as I know I am, to the things around me/us that could do us the most good, if we could only see them.”Tom Callos
