As the holiday season reaches its peak, it’s easy to get swept up in the busyness of life. Shopping lists, family gatherings, and endless to-dos can pull us in a hundred directions. But in all this noise, the true gift of the season—and of life—is presence.
Being present isn’t about ignoring the past or forgetting the future. It’s about honoring the moment we’re in and fully engaging with it. It’s about slowing down enough to savor the people, experiences, and lessons that surround us right now.
Learning to Be Present
One of the greatest teachers of presence in my life was my Grandpa John. At 98, he had lived through wars, technological revolutions, and personal triumphs and losses. Despite all he’d seen, he had a way of grounding himself in the here and now. Whether it was sharing stories over a meal or simply sitting quietly on the porch, he taught me that being present wasn’t about doing—it was about being.
He’d often remind me, “You can’t live yesterday again, and you can’t live tomorrow yet. Today is the only day you’ve got.”
In “Timeless Wisdom”, one elder shared, “The secret to a happy life isn’t in chasing what’s ahead—it’s in cherishing what’s here.” Those words echo what I’ve come to understand through my own journey, especially in moments of challenge and recovery.
Presence as Strength
Living in the moment isn’t always easy, but it’s one of the strongest things we can do. For me, presence has been a lifeline during my recovery from two hip replacements. On the hardest days, I’ve learned to focus not on the weeks ahead, but on the progress I can make today.
Martial arts has also been a profound teacher of presence. When you’re on the mats, every move demands your full attention. You’re not thinking about yesterday’s mistakes or tomorrow’s challenges—you’re entirely focused on the here and now. That focus doesn’t just sharpen your skills; it sharpens your ability to live in the present moment.
As “Lessons on Legacy” points out, “What you leave behind isn’t just in what you’ve done—it’s in the moments you’ve truly lived.”
How to Cultivate Presence
If you’re struggling to stay present, here are a few practices that can help:
- Pause and Breathe:
Take a moment to stop, take a deep breath, and reconnect with the present moment. - Limit Distractions:
Put away your phone, turn off the TV, and give your full attention to the people and experiences in front of you. - Practice Gratitude:
Reflect on what you’re thankful for right now—not yesterday, not tomorrow, but today. - Engage Fully:
Whatever you’re doing—whether it’s having a conversation, cooking a meal, or taking a walk—immerse yourself completely.
Reflections for Today
As we approach Christmas, let’s take a moment to step back from the hustle and truly be present.
What’s happening in your life today that deserves your full attention? Who in your life would be blessed by your undivided presence?
Living strong isn’t about doing it all; it’s about being fully alive in the moments we’re given. And as we move into the heart of the holiday season, there’s no greater gift we can give—to ourselves and to others—than the gift of presence.
