We live in a world that values speed—quick wins, instant results, and overnight success. But real growth doesn’t happen in a hurry. It takes patience, persistence, and the willingness to embrace the process.
Patience has been one of the hardest lessons for me to learn, especially during my recovery from two hip replacements. Progress hasn’t come quickly or easily. Some days, it feels like nothing has changed. But when I look back over the weeks, I can see just how far I’ve come. Every stretch, every step, every small victory has been part of something greater.
When I think about patience, I think of Grandpa John. At 95, he drove from Florida to Nova Scotia—not for speed, but for the journey itself. “You don’t rush through something worth doing,” he told me once, and those words have stuck with me.
Growth is a lot like that road trip. It’s not about how fast you get there—it’s about showing up for the process and appreciating each mile along the way.
In “Timeless Wisdom”, one elder reflected, “The best things in life take time. Be patient with yourself, and trust the journey.” That wisdom has carried me through the slower, tougher days of recovery, reminding me that patience isn’t passive—it’s an active part of growth.
Martial arts has also taught me this lesson. On the mats, progress isn’t immediate. It comes from countless repetitions, failures, and adjustments. There are no shortcuts—only the daily effort of showing up and doing the work. Life may be the ultimate teacher, but the mats make these lessons tangible.
As “Lessons on Legacy” points out, “Legacy isn’t built in a day—it’s built over time, one action at a time.” Patience is the bridge between where we are and where we want to be.
So how do we cultivate patience in a world that prizes speed?
- Focus on the Journey:
Shift your mindset from the end goal to the steps you’re taking right now. Each one matters. - Celebrate Progress:
No matter how small, every step forward is worth recognizing. Progress is built on patience and persistence. - Trust the Process:
Growth isn’t always visible in the moment, but it’s happening. Trust that your efforts will pay off in time.
As I prepare to return to the mats in January 2025, I’m reminded that patience has been my greatest ally. It’s taught me to value the process over perfection and to embrace each step of the journey as part of the bigger picture.
So let me ask you: Where in your life do you need more patience?
Maybe it’s with your health, your goals, or even your relationships. Whatever it is, remember that growth takes time. Trust the journey, celebrate the progress, and know that every step—no matter how small—is moving you forward.
Because patience isn’t just about waiting—it’s about believing in the power of the process.
