We often hear that patience is key when things are moving slowly, but I’ve realized that patience is just as crucial when things are going better than expected. Yesterday, after feeling incredible with my new hip, I wanted to fast-track my second surgery. However, my surgeon reminded me that even though I feel great, the healing process still needs time. Patience is not just about waiting for things to improve; it’s about respecting the journey, especially when you’re eager to move ahead.
This reminds me of my martial arts journey. When I earned each belt, it wasn’t just about skill or strength but about trusting the process. No rushing, no shortcuts—just consistent, patient work. That same mindset applies to my recovery. While I feel stronger every day, I know it’s important to give my body the time it needs to heal properly.
This brings me to the idea of the “dichotomy of patience.” In life, we often think patience is required only in the tough moments. But when things go well—when progress exceeds expectations—that’s when patience becomes even more valuable. It’s tempting to leap ahead, to push forward faster, but sometimes, the best course is to let things unfold naturally.
I’ve come to see this journey as a lesson in trusting the process. Whether it’s martial arts, recovery, or personal growth, patience is the bridge between where we are and where we want to be. And sometimes, the hardest part is slowing down, even when you feel like speeding up.
