As the highest-ranking master instructor and program director of our karate school, I bear the ultimate responsibility for ensuring a healthy, empowering culture within our community. Recent conversations with some of our valued parents have highlighted areas where our school can improve, particularly in fostering an environment where everyone feels seen, heard, respected, and appreciated.
One such conversation occurred with a dedicated parent whose children have been part of our martial arts program for seven years. Their openness and honesty about their concerns regarding the school’s culture served as a pivotal moment for reflection. Their willingness to share their thoughts and experiences underscored the importance of creating an inclusive atmosphere where every individual feels valued and respected.
In our dialogue, this parent expressed a desire for a school culture where parents and children alike feel welcomed and acknowledged for their contributions. They emphasized the need for instructors, including myself, to be approachable, receptive to feedback, and mindful of our communication and interactions with students and parents.
One significant issue that emerged was the importance of celebrating students’ achievements, such as belt promotions, in a meaningful and inclusive manner. The parent recounted an incident where their child’s promotion was not acknowledged as they had hoped, highlighting the need for clearer communication and a more celebratory approach to such milestones.
Another crucial aspect of our conversation was the acknowledgment that mistakes happen and that growth requires open dialogue and a willingness to address concerns directly. The parent’s courage in voicing their concerns underscored the importance of fostering a culture of transparency and accountability within our school community.
As the highest-tenured member of our team, I am committed to taking proactive steps to address the issues raised by parents. This includes ongoing discussions with my team about the importance of fostering a culture of respect, appreciation, and inclusivity. It also involves providing training and support to instructors to ensure they have the tools and resources needed to effectively communicate and engage with students and parents.
This journey of continuous improvement and growth is not just about the martial arts; it is deeply intertwined with my broader life mission of empowering people to live strong every day: mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and physically. The lessons I learn from these conversations are integral to my “Living A Strong Life” philosophy and the “Living Strong Kids Adventures” I author. They remind me that strength extends beyond physical prowess; it encompasses the ability to foster positive relationships, communicate effectively, and create an environment where everyone can thrive.
Ultimately, the responsibility for cultivating a healthy and empowering culture within our school rests with me. I am grateful to all the parents and students who have shared their thoughts and experiences, as your feedback is invaluable in guiding us toward building a stronger, more inclusive martial arts community.
In closing, I want to express my sincere appreciation to everyone who has contributed to our ongoing dialogue about the culture of our school. Your trust, support, and dedication to our shared journey of growth and learning are deeply appreciated.
Sincerely,
Master Peter Liciaga
